Texas Water Safari: First-Time Team Captain Story

Texas Water Safari - Victoria
We have been involved in Texas Water Safari for the last 5 years: me as a solo paddler and my wife, Connie, as my team captain.

In 2001, we came to Texas as observers and I paddled about 1/3 of the safari course in my home made Patuxent kayak. In 2002 and 2003 I run the race solo in Spencer X-treme canoe and finished in 78:19 and 66:05 hours respectively. We came again to San Marcos in 2004 but the race was postponned twice due to flooding and we couldn't make the later dates. In 2005, I paddled solo again and finished in 69:29 hours.

From each safari I am preparing a report with some pictures and video clips if possible. Last year, I bought a new waterproof camera, Pentax Pentio WP, specially for the safari and shot some pictures during the race. One of these pictures from the line up before the start was even published by Adventure Racing Magazine.

My safari pages are fairly popular and have some visitors. However, to my surprise, I noticed recently that there is one page that gets several times more hits that all reports on my heroic paddling:

This story was written by Connie in 2002 after our first safari. Pat Gunn-Spencer added some very nice comments to it. Well, team captains do not write very often about their safari experiences, so it may be an interesting reading for both team captains and racers before the incoming safari. I reformatted that page a little bit and made it easier to read.

I also asked Connie to write some retrospective comments after our 6 trips to Texas and her 3 safaris as a team captain. Unfortunately, we will not be able to come to the Safari this year, since I have already depleted my time and other resources on the Florida adventure.
