Tue - June 6, 2006Texas Water Safari 2006: 101 boats, 36 soloists, low water, high heat expected
Aquarena Springs, San Marcos, Texas. Saturday, June 10, 2006. Start to Texas Water Safari. 260 miles non-stop to Seadrift. Low water and high heat.
Unfortunately, I am not paddling Safari this year. I depleted my time and financial resources on WaterTribe Ultimate Florida Challenge earlier this year. Of course, I am watching all safari related discussions on-line. 101 boats entered the race according to the recent starting lineup. It is not a record number. I remember more than 120 entries. As a soloist I am, especially, interested in solo entries. I extracted all solo unlimited and C-1 entries from the general list: see 36 entries below. Devo and Phil Gumbert will be both racing in new boats built by Jack Spencer. It should be interesting. Unfortunately, no boat brand or description is required in the race entry. All solo boats (touring and sea kayaks, surf ski, custom safari boats, canoes except C-1) are simply included in the unlimited class. I prepared list of soloists from two 2002 and 2003 TWS where I tried to find some boat information for each paddler.
