Ruahine OceanX Kayak in 2007 Texas Water Safari - Ardie Olson 3rd Solo Unlimited

What solo boats are raced in Texas Water Safari? Almost any boats from a recreational kayak to a surfski. However, this information is not available in entry lists and you do not know which boats are finishing or winning the race.

For my first two safaris, 2002 and 2003, I tried to assign a boat to each solo paddler. Those races were obviously dominated by Spencer X-treme canoe, an unlimited solo boat designed and built in Martindale, TX.

Following my article, 3 Top Solo Paddlers in Texas Water Safari 2007 - Part I and Part II, in the next few posts I will try to identify some more boats paddled by soloists in 2007 Texas Water Safari.

Ardie Olson Texas Water Safari OceanX

Ardie Olson

paddler from Georgia, age 45

safari experience: completed TWS 2005 and won solo unlimited class in 49:25 paddling Seda Impulse sea kayak

finished as the 3rd solo unlimited (11th overall) in 42:22 paddling Ruahine OceanX multisport kayak

The picture of Ardie entering Cottonseed Rapid comes from Bob Brooks photo gallery.

I think it was quite a challenge to paddle this kayak with a small cockpit through all portages and logjams. Well, at least, it would be for me judging from experience with Sisson Nucleus. Ardie Olson is going to paddle the 2nd Annual Missouri River 340 race in July.

About OceanX from Ruahine Kayaks:

This Racing Sea Kayak was designed specifically for the “Length of New Zealand Race” and built around the safety criteria drawn up for that race. The OceanX is built along the lines a long racing surf ski, so it is very fast and tracks very well in the sea, it also very suitable for kayak racing in the many harbours, estuaries, fiords and lakes of New Zealand, it also lends itself well to the kayak sections of many multisport races and fast touring

The OceanX is fast, light, comfortable and surprisingly stable. It weighs only 11 kgs ‘out of the mould’ and 16.5 kgs ‘fully rigged’.

This latest addition to the Ruahine Kayaks stable is 6.4 metres in length and has a maximum beam of 500mm. It is fitted with foam bulkheads and hatches front and rear. There are decklines on front and rear decks and steering is from a Kengineering fully retractable hydrodynamic rudder controlled by OZO footrests and toe flaps.
