90% Pulling Hard + 10% Technique = Kayak Speed ?

sisson nucleus kayak In addition to his tips on a double blade paddling technique, Tommy Yonley sent me the following message explaining his views:
I should mention that I am no expert on technique, but I wrote that to express that simple, common sense things are the most important--especially in Texas, most paddlers are really slow. A lot of people seem to think that some ultra sophisticated, super good technique is somehow going to magically make them a lot faster--but it won't. Pulling hard is where 90% of your speed comes from--technique only makes a 10% difference.
I was hoping that I could improve my speed more than 10% by working on my paddling technique ... Well, everything depends on how bad your technique is. What do you think?
