Fit to Paddle, the Paddler's Guide to Strength and Conditioning

Fit to Paddle, The Paddler's Guide to Strength and Conditioning Fit to Paddle, The Paddler's Guide to Strength and Conditioning by Rocky Snyder, 2003, 160 pages.

The book provides a paddling sport specific conditioning program including flexibility, endurance and strength training, medicine ball and stability training. There are also sample workout programs. The exercises can be performed at home, at the gym or on water. The book can help to prevent injuries, especially, those caused be overexertion. This is a good resource for all recreational and competitive paddlers. I am using this book and included several described exercises to my training. Not a bad investment at $10.17.

Update: I posted the above comments in Februrary of 2005 in my old Wayfarer blog. Paddlers and racers are still looking for this book (see, e.g., the discussion on surfski forum) but it is out of print now. You can only buy it used for ridiculously high price. However, there is a hope for a new revised edition.

Sorry to say I haven't found anywhere that still has copies of Fit to Paddle. The publisher didn't think it sold well enough and took it out of print. That's of course when everyone wants to buy it. I do have the rights to the book and plan on self-publishing a revised edition in the not-so-distant future.

Meantime, you can visit Rocky Snyder's web site: Devotion2Motion.net with some interesting stuff and other books.

Good news: the interest in fitness paddling is growing!
