Registration for 2008 Missouri River 340 is open. The third annual MR-340 race will run from Kansas City to St Charles, July 15-19, 2008. In addition to solo and tandems there is now also a team division for 3 to 6 person boats. It opens the race for Texas Water Safari big boats and, perhaps, for voyager canoes. Texans are coming!
It seems that other paddling races organized by RiverMiles.com on the Kansas River have no dates assigned yet.
The 50 mile Kansas River Gritty Fitty race from Lawrence to Kaw Point is tentatively scheduled for the late August this year. Unfortunately, August is pretty busy with races including the Glenwood Race on Colorado River. The shorter Kansas River race, 35 mile Kalloween Clasic will probably run like last year in late October.
Tommy Yonley has sent me information about a new race on San Marcos River:
Texas River Championship.
Canoe and Kayak Marathon Race.
April 19, 2008 on the San Marcos River
Pro Class: 39 Mile Solo Unlimited with $500 1st prize, and crowning of the 2008 TCRA Solo Unlimited Champion (any solo racing kayak, canoe, or surfski).
Expedition Class: 21 mile "Recreational" Solo & Tandem.
The Pro class will start at San Marcos City pPark @9:00 AM. The Expedition class will start at Staples Dam @ 8:00 AM. The both races will finish at Luling 90 gravel bar.
In my opinion, we have long needed a race covering this stretch of river because this is the most technical stretch of river on the course of the 260 mile Texas Water Safari. If you have been considering racing the TWS, but aren't sure if you can make the distance (or survive the river), this is a good test of your abilities. If you are planning on doing the TWS, this race is a great tuneup--and some extra motivation to get in shape and learn the river a bit earlier in the season.
