Tue - August 23, 2005Canoe Colorado Race on Colorado River in Glenwood Canyon from Dotsero to Hanging Lake![]() August
21, 2005: Canoe Colorado Race on Colorado River in Glenwood Canyon from Dotsero
to Hanging Lake. There were only seven boat
attending the race in comparison to twenty boats last year. The effect of
rising gas prices? The river flow at ~1250cfs was lower than last year
(~1600cfs) but the race was faster judging from performance of the same solo
paddlers.
It was my second race in Sisson Nucleus kayak. I was racing Patuxent 19.5 in 2002 and couldn't race in 2003. I had a pretty good race, much better than the previous one. Last year after racing season I figured out that I suffered from some exercise induced asthma. So, now I am using inhaler before any intense workout. I also took a long warm up before the race by paddling a mile or so upstream above Dotsero (see the first two pictures). I had a quick start due to a new sprayskirt with a zipper which stays on cockpit coaming. I was even in the lead for first one or two miles before Mike Lesnik in his X-Par Missile passed me. He paddled through left narrow channel around islands while everybody else was going on right. The first drop at the entry to Glenwood Canyon had some steep waves. I took a sip of water since I didn't have time to tighten the sprayskirt well enough. Jerry Nolan and his partner took a swim in that rapid. The next two drops were much easier since it was possible to avoid the biggest waves. I lost to Mike about 4 minutes at the finish in comparison to 6 minutes last year. I still have room for improvement, especially, in rapids and turbulent water, however, my Sisson is not the fastest boat for this race. My official time was 1:14:15 h. According to my GPS I paddled with average speed of 7.6 mph over 9.37 miles with maximum speed of 11.1 mph. It looks like the race is shorter than 10 miles. However, it's also possible that I lost satellite communication in some stretches of the deep canyon. Race results & pictures. |
