Paddling Non-Stop on Still Water to Cover 144 Miles in 24 Hours?

144 Miles in 24 Hours means 6 mph average speed over 24 hours. I can hardly keep that speed for 1 hour...

On April 13th, 2006, Brandon Nelson will attempt to break a record for non-stop 24 hour paddling. He will paddle on 2 mile oval course on Lake Whatcom, Bellingham, WA. Brandon will also bring awareness and donated funds to the Whatcom Hospice Foundation, to help achieve their ongoing goal to offer affordable, loving support to those with advanced illnesses or limited life expectancy - Mission: KayakForCare!

The boat he'll be paddling, CA-125, is named for the blood test that can be used to detect ovarian cancer. The kayak was designed and built at Western Washington University's Vehicle Research Institute, CA-125, measures 23' long, 20" wide, and tips the scales at 16.8 lbs!

You can read more about this challenge and the boat designing and building process in the interview with Brandon at Wetdawg.com. And another article Kayaker Chases a Dream in The Bellingham Herald.

The current world record for miles paddled in a kayak on still water over 24 continuous hours was set in South Africa on New Year's Day of 1991, by a woman named Marinda Hartzenberg. She paddled 137 miles.
