24-hour Guinness Paddling Record in Paddler Magazine Again - Carter Johnson

Carter Jonson
The last issue of Paddler Magazine brings an article on Carter Johnson's 24 hour flatwater paddling record: Will the Real Marathon Man Please Stand Up? His 150 miles in a stock Huki S1-X surfski were officially confirmed as Guinness World Record.

In the Sept/Oct issue there was article about Brandon Nelson's 24 hour paddling attempt. Brandon covered 147 miles just a few days after Carter's paddling.

Carter on the timing:

My attempt was schedules with Guinness in mid-2005 and had nothing to do with Brandon's attempt. I almost canceled when Brandon made his public announcement and I learned about hardship of his life. [Nelson's attempt honored his mother, who died of cancer in April]. The timing was unfortunate, but we both were doing the Yukon River Quest, which gave us only a few weeks window for recovery.
...
There was really no chase between us; we're just two like-minded people.
Carter also comments on his other long distances races this year: 460-mile Yukon River Quest in Epic Endurance 18 sea kayak and 300 mile WaterTribe Everglades Challenge with his girlfriend Sally Mason in a prototype double Huki surfski as well as on his training.
... kayaking for 14 hours will not make you fast. You're far better off doing shorter focused workouts. Most importantly, you need to love being on water. If you're not loving it heart and soul, then no amount of training will pay off.
