The third Sunday of August is time for the Dotsero to Hanging Lake Race on the Colorado River organized by Canoe Colorado. It starts at the Dotsero service road bridge and runs 10 miles to Hanging Lake parking above Shoshone Power Plant dam. It is class 1 river with three drops offering some standing waves and splashes.
There are classes to accommodate any boat including fast and touring kayaks, and canoes. Canoe Colorado provides cash prizes and paddling gear for a random drawing for all finishers.
So, this year the race in on August 19.
The Colorado River flow at Dotsero is right now about average.
Marcie and Jerry Nolan prepared a great video on DVD from the last year race. I edited a short video clip from Marcie's footage showing just the first 4 finishers.
2006 Glenwood Canyon Race
first 4 finishers
Information provided by Eric Nyre from Canoe Colorado:
Registration will begin at 7am, with the race starting at 8am. The entry fee is $10 per person, please pay cash because we give the money right back to the winners. In fact we throw an extra $100 per class along with all entry fees for that class, to be split 50-30-20 to first, second and third. The race classes will be the same as last year. Fast kayaks will have their own group, giving the regular sea kayaks a chance for winning. Solo canoes, recreational canoes and touring canoes will also have their own classes.
After the race a group will be paddling the Colorado from Grizzly Creek down to Glenwood. That's a class II run, possibly III- depending on if they run South Canyon.
