2007 Canoe Colorado Race in Glenwood Canyon - More Rapids with Opened Shoshone Dam

August 19, 2007. The annual Dotsero to Hanging Lake race on the Colorado River gathered this year only 10 boats. However, who did not come has missed some unique conditions on the river in the Glenwood Canyon.

The flow at 1550 cfs was about average, but the Shoshone Powerplant Dam was open. Instead of a slow water and a lake at the finish we had the river flowing along the entire 10 miles race course. There was a surprize: two additional rapids were exposed on the river upstream of the Hanging Lake parking.

In the picture below you can see the race overall winner, Jeremy Rodgers from Boulder, with his JKK Supernova kayak at the finish above the Shoshone Dam. In recent years, the water level was near the grass line there.

I was racing in my Thunderbolt-x kayak and had a much better run than in previous years with Sisson Nucleus. The Thunderbolt was not only faster but also much more stable in a rough water and waves.

I did not shoot pictures by myself this time, but I mounted my Pentax Optio W10 on a kayak deck and set up the camera in an interval mode: 180 pictures every 30 seconds. So, all pictures from this year race are coming from the automatic shooting. I will post more pictures in Paddling with a Camera blog together with a description of the camera mount based on the sticky pod.

And, I took a shower after the race on Dillon Lake ...
