The South Platte River is usually the only open water during winter time in northern Colorado, so I am paddling the river fairly frequently now. Typically, I am paddling upstream and then returning downstream starting at Kersey, Kuner, Evans or Miliken.
In the table below you can find some organized river trips I am aware of. These include two very informal races in March. I will try to post in advance my training runs here.
Please, e-mail me if you would like to join me. I may change my plans due to weather or river flow. If I see a good flow I would like to explore the river further downstream towards Fort Morgan.
I don't dress for immersion for winter paddling on the South Platte since the river is pretty shallow in typical flows below 1000 cfs. However, I always carry a change of cloths and some other emergency items. River banks at launching spots or portages may be icy and slippery. It's possible to find a nice warm day for paddling, but air temperature is dropping down amazingly fast at sunset.
