March 16, 2008. River flow ~850 cfs at Kersey. Four paddlers showed up before sunrise at Kersey for the 2nd Rotten Egg Race upstream on the South Platte River to Evans Riverside park. Here are the results.

paddler boat time distance
Marek Uliasz Thunderbolt-X kayak 3:25 9.31
John Murphy Ruahine Opus kayak 3:47 9.27
Eric Nyre Valley Rapier 20 kayak 3:47 9.27
Rob Bean Spencer X-treme canoe, single blade 4:40 9.84

It seems that everybody covered a different distance on the same race course. Last year I paddled 9.26 miles in 3:27. My average speed was 2.72 mph (max 4.4 mph), but I managed to keep 3 mph for the first half of the race till the first portage. The last couple of miles were pretty slow for me.

Weather and water level were pretty good in the morning for the upstream run. Paddling in front I had a chance to see a lot of undisturbed birds and one very curious weasel.

The club downriver trip from Evans to Kersey wasn't so popular as it was last year. I didn't count boats. Around 20? I guess paddlers were concerned of weather. Indeed, we had to face a strong headwind before returning to Kersey and, later during the day, snow came.
