virtual racing: cruisers, racers and supermen

virtual racing
The original idea behind the virtual race was to compare cruising speed of different boats under the same paddler. I paddled three of may boats (Kruger Sea Wind canoe, Surfrigger, outrigger canoe and my safari boat, Spencer X-treme canoe) over the distance of about 18 miles on my local Boyd Lake. Later, I shortened the distance to 5 miles and invited other paddlers to join me in a virtual race. I gathered almost 40 entries in 2004, and 36 entries this year so far.

Everybody is welcome to enter 5 mile (8 km) or 10 mile (16 km) race ! Any boat and any skill level as long as you are ready to paddle hard, have fun, and own GPS or other device to measure time and distance. Just send me the results of your race by e-mail. The required information include:

  • paddler name, age, and location
  • race date
  • boat and paddle
  • distance, time and/or average speed
  • optional: maximum speed, average HRM
  • a short description of paddling area and racing course, shallow or deep water
  • a short description of water and weather conditions
  • any other related comments
  • optional: links to your website, boat used and/or paddling area; pictures of you and your boat, GPS tracks

Recently, I redesigned the virtual racing webpage. All 5 mile entries are divided into two tables:
  • cruisers with the average speed below 6 mph,
  • racers with the average 6 mph or higher.
  • The results of supermen paddling above 7 mph are typed in red.

It should be easier to analyze the results and you can get promoted to the higher category. I have my own entries in both tables. The new setup may be less intimidating for recreational paddlers who don't like to compete with surfskis and racing kayaks. There is also a special class of team racing that should be interesting tp adventure racers. So far, I haven't received any tandem entries but the virtual racing season never ends. In this blog I will try to provide a little bit more information about virtual racers.

Any comments or suggestions how to improve this project?
