Missouri River 340: the race will be hot

Yesterday, we drove from Fort Collins, CO to Kansas City, MO in 10.5 hours. Our driving along I-70 was rather uneventful with high air temperature up 106F in Kansas and pretty strong wind. It seems that we can expect exactly the same weather during the race. The forecast for tomorrow: air temperature up 99F, south wind 10-15 mph with higher gusts, possibility of thunderstorms in the afternoon, getting a little bit cooler on Thursday and Friday.

The Missouri River 340 race starts tomorrow at 8:00 am at Kaw Point at the confluence of Missouri and Kansas River and goes almost 340 miles to Bishop's Landing at St. Charles. There are 16 boat entries: 6 tandems and 10 soloists including two women. Paddlers are coming from Missouri (13), Kansas (3) , Texas (2), Alabama (1) , Virginia (1), North Carolina (1), and Colorado (1).

I see two familiar names on the entry list: a Texas racer, West Hansen and WaterTribe paddler, Dawn Keller (TurtleWoman). West Hansen is paddling "Devo Spencer X-treme One", a solo unlimited boat built for James DeVoglaer "Devo" by Jack Spencer for this year Texas Water Safari. I guess we can expect a first race course record here.

I will be paddling my safari boat, Spencer X-treme. It was more than a year ago, when last time I paddled her on the river during Texas Water Safari 2005. I am taking my Pentax Optio W10 camera with me.

I am sure that the real challenge in the Missouri River 340 will be the excessive heat. And that south wind is not exactly a cooling breeze.
