Around Florida in 19 Days by Kayak, Sailing Canoe and Sailboat

Fort Desoto before the race start
The 1200 mile Ultimate Florida Challenge had a really surprising finale. After more than two weeks of racing three top challengers sprinted through the last 120 miles from Cedar Key to Fort Desoto for the final victory. They represented three different boat classes: a kayak with small downwind sail (class 1), Sea Wind canoe with outriggers and Balogh sail (class 3) and a light sailboat (class 4).

It was also surprising that a kayak was the first boat close the loop around Florida. Warren Richey aka Sharkchow won the 2006 Ultimate Florida Challenge in 19 days 6 hours and 48 minutes paddling the Current Designs Solstice kayak. Mark Przedwojewski aka ManitouCruiser arrived in his Sea Wind a mere 50 minutes later. Matt Layden aka Wizard came in his Enigma in five hours after him.

Warren has competed in three WaterTribe Everglades Challenges in the same kayak winning the class 1 category in 2003, 2004 and 2005. He works as a reporter for The Christian Science Monitor and published an excellent article about the challenge: Around Florida in 19 Days by Kayak. He is working on a longer version of that article for Sea Kayak Magazine.

Some quotes from the Warren's article:

My working assumption was that a sea kayak with a one-meter downwind sail simply could not keep pace with sailboats. My motive was not to do battle against sailors or to "beat" anyone. My challenge was to see how quickly and efficiently I could complete the course, testing my own limits and expanding my concept of the possible.

To me, motive is a critical aspect. It empowered me to compete at my highest level and yet freed me to rejoice in the success of other racers.

Outsiders may not understand this. But those who enter these events include some of the most interesting people I've ever met. They are rugged individualists, folks of integrity and courage. To use the old cliché, they are the kind of people I'd feel comfortable sharing a foxhole with. The battlefield analogy is a good one because the UFC was a physical and mental battle from beginning to end.
