Sat - April 22, 2006Google Earth Map with GPS Track from Everglades Challenge 2004![]() I am getting ready to post a GPS track from my UFC
paddling with some interesting features on Florida Bay. However, first, I want
to explore Google Earth as a tool for sharing this kind of information. For this
purpose I used GPS data from my 2004 Everglades
Challenge.
I do not have a full coverage of my 2004 race, only a part from Marco Island to the finish at Key Largo. I left the output frequency of my Garmin gpsmap 76S on default settings and the first half of my data were overwritten. My race went slow (almost 7 days), but pretty smooth as expected from Sea Wind with a downwind sail only. I carried a video camera with a tripod and spend a lot of time shooting (see my video clip). You can notice a loop at Chokoloskee Bay: I returned back to the Park Ranger Station from the checkpoint to get wilderness permit before heading into Everglades. I slept on Rodgers River and Watson River Chickees and in the boat during crossing the Florida Bay (short naps at End Key, stacked in a shallow water near Jimmy Channel, and at one of Manatee Keys). I took a "shortcut" from Wilderness Waterway to Whitewater Bay through Labyrinth (see my report). I worked on these GPS data with Garmin MapSource which allowed one to view them with Google Earth as well. I am going to prepare the GPS track from UFC 2006 in the same format, so you can overlay them in the Google Earth. However, I would appreciate some comments: - Do you have any problems using Google Earth to display my map? You can download and install a free version if you haven't done it yet. Google Earth is available for both PC and Mac but may not work on older computers. - Do you find this presentation useful? Any suggestions? I was afraid to put too many details there. I have limited my data to a path and waypoints every 12 hours as time markers. - Are you interested in sharing GPS data from your race or expedition? - Can you recommend other tools for displaying GPS data instead of Google Earth? I will be exploring some other options for displaying and analyzing data from GPS and heart rate monitor.
