Still digging in my paddling archives and memories – more random pictures from 2006 Watertribe Ultimate Florida Challenge, expedition style race around Florida. This time Fort Desoto beach again, but kayaks and surfskis participating in Everglades Challenge and Ultramarathon.
Necky Loksha III kayak
Necky Loksha III (19.5’x21″) paddled by JungleJim aka James Collins in Everglades Challenge. He finished in 3 days, 13 hours, and 30 min as the fastest solo boat in class 1 and class 2. Necky Loksha III is the first real class 2 boat with the length/beam ratio of 11.14 which has finished the Everglades Challenge.
Ruahine Duet kayak
Ruahine Duet kayak before the start to Ultra Marathon. The team sleipner and Llyr aka Ulf Petri and Murray Maitland won the class 1 of this race from Fort Desoto to Placida in 11 hours and 45 minutes. Is it the first multisport kayak in WaterTribe events?
Huki SX-1 surfski
Huki SX-1 paddled by paddlintengu aka Thomas Peacock before the start to the Ultra Marathon. He finished in 12 hours and 36 minutes.
Bayrunner sit-on-top double sea kayak
Bayrunner, a South African fiberglass sit-on-top double sea kayak, on the beach of Fort Desoto. Frogy130 and CatLady aka Ed Francavilla and Shari Francavilla completed the Ultra Marathon (class 2) in 14 hours and 7 minutes.
Huki tandem surfski
Huki tandem surfski paddled by XLXS and LilMonster aka Carter Johnson and Sally Mason in Everglades Challenge in 3 days, 5 hours, and 48 minutes.
Carter Johnson:
… a faster boat does mean faster times **providing you can keep it moving to some extent**. Now keeping it moving is the tricky part. But our 2006 EC time included a full 24 hours of out of the boat not moving and XS (about 110lbs) and I still posted a record time. So there is an undeniable cross over point even with “out of the boat time” being much greater than with what would be necessary with a more comfortable boat. Sooo, the question is personal: what is suffering less. 72 hour with 6 hours of sleep, but comfy in your boat, or 72 hours with 24 hours of sleep, and some ass pains. I will take the 24 hours of sleep and deal with the sore ass later.
Mako Millenium surfski
Mako Millenium surfski paddled by chingachook aka Shawn Wilber. He won the Ultra Marathon in 11 hours and 10 minutes.
Feathercraft K1 Expedition folding kayak
Feathercraft K1 Expedition folding kayak paddled by Doooobrd aka Donald Polakovics around Florida in Ultimate Florida Challenge in 26 days, 18 hours, and 30 minutes.
