Starting Winter Paddling and Racing Season on the South Platte River

winter canoe on South Platte River

Yesterday, I finally started my winter paddling season on the South Platte River. I paddled Sea Wind a couple miles upstream from Kersey to Lonetree Creek where I had a little photo session. River flow is good (600-700 cfs at Kersey) and the South Platte is flowing all way to Fort Morgan and Balzac.

For January I am planning some more relaxing paddling and photography on the South Platte. Water permitting I will try to explore some new river segments and update my river guide.

February and March should bring more intense workouts and training, mostly in upstream/downstream mode. Traditionally, I am planning some informal racing:

  • 4th South Platte River Upstream “Rotten Egg” Race – second half of March; 9 miles upstream from Kersey to Evans to meet Annual Joint Club trip
  • South Platte River Marathon – late April, from Wildcat on St Vrain Creek to Kuner, 31+ miles with 5 short dam portages
  • If there is any interest we can do more racing, especially something less challenging, e.g., 5 miles downstream or upstream without any portages.

Everybody is welcome to join me.

  1. Thanks for such a great blog and pics. Your site is one that was inspiration for me to start my own blog and challenge myself to kayak through the winter.
